It happens without warning. You're driving, half-paying attention to whatever's on the playlist, and then — a sound hits. Maybe it's the opening swell of strings on a song you haven't heard in years. Maybe it's the moment a vocalist drops into a whisper right before the bridge. Maybe it's a guitar solo that seems to bend time. Whatever it is, the hairs on your arms stand up, a wave moves through your chest, and for a few seconds, you feel genuinely, inexplicably alive.

This phenomenon has a name: frisson (pronounced free-SOHN, borrowed from French). And while musicians and music lovers have been chasing it for as long as there's been music, scientists have only relatively recently started mapping the neurology behind it. What they've found is both fascinating and, for performers, deeply practical.

What's Actually Happening in Your Body

When you experience frisson, your body is doing something remarkably complex in a very short window of time. The auditory cortex processes the sound, but the emotional response radiates outward into the limbic system — the brain's emotional processing center — and triggers a cascade of neurochemical activity.

Dopamine, the neurotransmitter associated with reward and anticipation, plays a starring role. Research published in Nature Neuroscience found that dopamine is released both at the peak moment of a musical climax and in the seconds leading up to it — the anticipatory phase. In other words, your brain is rewarding you for expecting something emotionally significant, not just experiencing it.

This is why a song you've heard a hundred times can still give you chills. Your brain has learned the architecture of the song, and it starts releasing dopamine in advance of the moment it knows is coming. The emotional response becomes almost Pavlovian.

Alongside dopamine, norepinephrine (which governs the fight-or-flight response) contributes to the physical sensation — the raised hair, the goosebumps, the quickened pulse. Music that gives you chills is literally triggering a mild version of your body's arousal system. It's a safe thrill. A controlled emotional surprise.

Not Everyone Gets It — And That's Interesting

Here's something that might surprise you: not everybody experiences frisson. Research suggests somewhere between 55 and 86 percent of people report experiencing it, which means a meaningful portion of the population may never feel that physical jolt from music.

Studies have linked frisson susceptibility to a personality trait called openness to experience — one of the Big Five personality factors. People who score high in openness tend to be more imaginative, more emotionally curious, and more likely to engage deeply with art. They're also more likely to cry at movies, get absorbed in novels, and yes, get goosebumps from music.

Interestingly, there's also emerging evidence that people who experience frisson have stronger connections between the auditory cortex and areas of the brain involved in emotional processing. Essentially, their brains are wired to feel music more deeply — literally.

For performers, this has an important implication: your audience is not a monolith. Some people in any given room are primed to have a visceral physical response to what you do. Others are processing your performance more intellectually. Great performers, knowingly or not, tend to create moments that work on both levels simultaneously.

The Musical Ingredients of a Spine-Tingling Moment

So what actually triggers frisson? Researchers have identified several common musical elements:

Unexpected harmonic shifts. A sudden move to an unexpected chord — especially one that resolves beautifully — is one of the most reliable frisson triggers. The brain registers the surprise, and the reward system responds to the resolution.

Sudden changes in dynamics. Moving from quiet to loud (or loud to quiet) in a way that feels emotionally earned rather than arbitrary can produce a powerful physical response. Think of the way a song builds and builds and then drops everything except a single voice.

Human vocal expressiveness. The human voice is uniquely positioned to trigger frisson because we're biologically attuned to reading emotion in other people's voices. A crack in someone's voice, a held note at the edge of control, a whisper that suddenly swells — these communicate something that bypasses rational processing and hits the emotional brain directly.

Entrainment and syncopation. When a rhythm locks in unexpectedly, or breaks from a pattern in a way that feels right, the body responds. Rhythm is deeply tied to physical sensation — it's why we tap our feet, why we dance, why certain beats feel like they're living inside our chest.

The power of silence. This one's underrated. A well-placed pause — a moment where the music stops and lets the listener hang in anticipation — can be more powerful than any note. The brain fills the silence with expectation, and when the sound returns, the emotional release is amplified.

What This Means for Performers

This is where things get genuinely exciting for anyone who performs. Because frisson isn't entirely accidental. You can learn to engineer it — not in a cynical, manufactured way, but by understanding the emotional architecture of a performance and being intentional about how you build and release tension.

Master the dynamic range. If every moment of your set is at the same emotional intensity, nothing will feel transcendent. Contrast is everything. Quiet makes loud louder. Stillness makes movement more powerful.

Learn to sit in tension. Many performers rush through emotionally charged moments — a natural instinct when you're nervous. But the audience needs time to feel the weight of what's happening. Slow down. Trust the moment.

Use your voice (or instrument) at its edges. The moments of greatest emotional resonance often happen at the technical edges of a performer's ability — not because of imperfection, but because of the vulnerability and effort those moments communicate. Audiences can feel when something costs a performer something.

Study your own frisson moments. What songs or performances give you chills? Analyze them. What's happening harmonically, rhythmically, dynamically in those moments? You can learn a tremendous amount about your own aesthetic sensibility by mapping your own responses.
